MARIPOSA was designed for an accomplished yachtsman and boat builder in Maine. He fell in love with the Buzzard Bay 25 and currently owns one of the original four that were built back in 1914 by the Herreshoff Mfg. Co. He wanted an opportunity to build one for himself but because he sails in the deep water of Maine that also contains many, many lobster pots, he did not want a centerboard that could catch a lobster pot line.
The changes that were made to the hull included a fixed full keel that replicates the lateral plan and ballast ratio of the original, a 15" extension to the transom and a 10hp inboard diesel for when the wind refuses to cooperate. The deeper keel will provide an increase in stability and MARIPOSA should give her older cousins a good run for the money when it comes to sailing performance in a breeze.
MARIPOSA was launched in June of 2010 and sailed all summer long in the waters of Maine.
