BYSTANDER was built in 1929 for Mike Vanderbilt to be used as a tender for his America's cup campaigns. She was used as a tender for six defenders from 1934 to 1967. BYSTANDER was rescued by Elizabeth Meyer of J Class Management and brought to Newport to be restored by Chris Scott and Narragansett Shipwrights.
J Class hired me to lay out and design the aluminum fuel tanks, stainless steel water tanks, under water exhaust, refrigeration, heating, steering and deck hatches. A majority of these systems were not on the original yacht but had to be fit into the existing hull form so the task was more challenging than usual. The updated interior arrangement includes a complete galley and head with bath tub.
